I have a Vice.  So I get a large nut.  Car wheel nut maybe.  Loosen off the cotter nut a bit.  Put the frame up on the vice with the cotter in the jaws.  So that the nut is on one jaw ant the plain end is in the other jaw, straight across.  The Wheel nut is a loose fit on the plain end of the cotter.  With that on the plain end.  Keeping the crank straight in the vice.  Maybe having an assistant from the studio audience, to hold it.  Tighten the handle.  It must stay straight as you'll bend it.  If ok it will go bang, then loose in the vice.  Then just push it out.  This way the pin and the cranks will not be damaged and they will be reusable.

thanks alecw35!

First put the nut back on and give it a wack if it wont budge i drill mine out using a small pilot drill and working my way up in size. Use a centre punch to make a little dent in the middle of the cotterpin first. You can get some new ones for about £2 mate.

These have always been a complete bitch, trying to hit a stuck pin with a hammer only bends it as you dont hit it square on usually because the chainwheel or crank arm are getting in the way. A socket over one end and a vice over the other works OK but it needs quite a bit of room and an accomplice to hold the frame square to get it right. Recently ive used a thick metal rod, pressed onto the top of the nut and hammered it from the top of the rod, it keeps it square and after a good few whacks has worked without bending the pin. Drilling it out is a major hag and can knacker the crank arm/chainwheel.

What end are you all drilling?
I drill the bottom (non threaded) end.
work your way up through drill sizes, use plenty of oil and by the time you grt to 8mm there is usually enough heat for it to be tapped out unless youve bent the pin over too much!
