Hi There:
Picked this up at a race at the weekend. Not really what I was after been chasing a Stars & Stripes for a while now. How ever funds are tight and this was left as the guy who brought it didn't want to take it home again?

As you can see its seen better days the gears don't work as they are missing the little chain that links the cable to the hub. Also after a new grip as someone cut the tip off of one. If anyone has any parts that would suit this then please let me know as I said funds are tight (as I'm sure are with everyone at the moment) but I'd love to get her looking a little more presentable

Whats a good way to get rid of the rust and clean this up a little . My tech knowledge is limited to say the least so not really looking to take it apart to restore . Just want to make it functional and tidy it up.

I'm the same guy from Brighton who was on here last year but lost my log-in details so have had to re-register.

Thanks

Nice bike if you got it for free or under £30! It needs work but if you just want to ride it as is then you just need the gearchain, some gear cable clips and maybe another twistgrip. (i have these parts spare and will pm you with a price posted   )

The brakes come off very easy and will make it a lot easier to clean up (some very fine wire wool and wd40 will do the trick)

I would take the wheels and brakes off and give them a good clean, clean the frame and polish it, clean all the chrome and put it back together keeping it original. You may want to look out for a replacement seat or get your one recovered but both options wont be cheap (maybe just tape it up for now till you get some more cash in)

As for a stars you should pick a nice one up for under £100 (minters are quite a bit more but worth it)

The question everyone wants to know is how much you paid for it mate!!!

Thanks for that, I'll await your PM. I noticed I'm missing a rear mud guard too.
It was at a Bike Race at the weekend in the Bike Jumble. I spotted the grips poking out form a pile. After much patter from the seller "Make me an offer mate ". Not wanting another project and with funds tight I walked away. Later spotted the guy had left it with a sign saying "Take me home" I did, the seller later saw me loading up the gold beast and was glad that I had it but asked for a T-shirt in trade from my stall.

So the bike cost me £3.90.

Thanks guys. I was thinking of re-creating the stickers myself. Anyone have a close up of them. I'll knock them up in Illustrator once they're done I can just mail them to anyone if they're interested.

So the little chain that goes into the hub that I have missing. How do I go about re-attaching that?? IS it easy and if so can someone please explain and where would I get one.

Cheers

the solid barrel part of the gear chain just screws clockwise into the hub, tighten it as far as you can then back it off if the chain isn't horizontal, and the other end screws into the housing at the end of the cable, you then have to adjust the cable using the screw thread in the housing until you have three gears. it takes a fraction of the time that it takes to explain it!

you maybe better off looking for another cheap bike to rob the parts off if your looking to do it up as cheap as possible.

Most of the parts would clean up nice (it wouldnt be a minter but a nice clean bike)

It all depends if you want to keep it original or not.

I would do a proper job and completely strip it and rebuild using the original parts.
