Heres how I strip, clean and rebuild the 3 speed hubs.

Tools required
Basic spanner set,
Small flat screwdriver,
Pair of cone spanners,
Hammer,
Punch,
Parrafin or degreaser of some sort,
Fresh grease,
Oil.

Remove the wheel from the bike and remove wheel nuts and washers.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto001.jpg
With a small screwdriver, gently prize the retaining spring clip from the drive hub

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto004.jpg

This will allow access to the rear sprocket, 2 spacers and the spoke protector.

Now the hub should look like this

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto005.jpg

Remove the dust cover and the lock nuts and spacers (note that the drive side spacer is the thinner of the 2)

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto006.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto008.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto014.jpg

If the lock nuts proove hard to undo use an 8mm spanner on the spindle to allow more leverage.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto010.jpg

Next part is to remove the cones, the drive side one may be a bit stiff to start with as there is a spring on the inside of it.
Dont worry it wont ping off!!

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto050.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto051.jpg

With the cones removed the drive section can be pulled out

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto052.jpg

The ball cup is the next part to be removed. This is much easier to do on a complete wheel rather than a single hub purely because with a complete wheel you get more leverage!
Place the punch in one of the indentations and give it a firm tap with a hammer. Alternate sides to allow for an even thread break.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto053.jpg

Next to come out is the gear ring

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto054.jpg

The next section is where it gets exciting!!

With the ball cup removed the main gear assembly can now slide out

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto056.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto057.jpg

Place the internals on the bench and start to remove all components.
The first part to remove is the clutch

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto068.jpg

There are 4 parts to this, the thrust ring, axle pin, clutch and sleeve. Easliy done!

Finally the planet cage and gear can be removed from the spindle

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto069.jpg

As you strip parts, place them into a container for degreasing

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto058.jpg

On the planet cage you have 4 planet gears and pins. These can be removed easily with a little leverage from a screwdriver if nessesary. On the other end of the cage you have 2 Pawls, This is where most of the problems occur due to seizure or snapped springs. Once again these can be removed with a little leverage with a screwdriver.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto073.jpg

The pawl springs are VERY fine and are easily lost, please make sure you dont lose them

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/bomber%20forum/sturmeyresto081.jpg

And there ya have it one stripped hub.
Clean all parts and replace in the opposite order.

Good luck

In hindsight I thought it a bit cruel to leave it like that so I've just rebuilt a hub so I can do a rebuild section  ;)

First bits ya need are the planet cage, gears and pins

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild001.jpg

Simply place the gears in the sockets and drop the pins in.

Flip the cage over and get the pawls and R springs ready

You will notice that there are 2 different size pawls, for this bit ya need the smaller ones.

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild005.jpg

This is the most tricky part of the rebuild as its a tight fit to re insert the pawls and  springs.
Here is a pic showing what way they fit

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild010.jpg

Now all ya need to do is slip the pawl into the socket with the spring underneath. Be very careful as the springs can ping!

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild009.jpg

Once fitted it should look like this

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild011.jpg

Next slip the spindle through the planet gears so it looks like this

As you look at the picture, the spindle goes in from the left side

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild012.jpg

Clutch next

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild017.jpg
These are the bits needed and when fitted to the spindle it should look like this

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild018.jpg

Insert your spindle and cage into the hub

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild013.jpg

Gear ring next, heres what ya need

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild014.jpg

Much easier to fit the pawls and R springs on this bit, heres what way they go round

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild015.jpg

fitted

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild016.jpg

Fit the gear ring into the hub

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild019.jpg

then screw in the ball ring

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild020.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild021.jpg

Fit the drive gear next

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild022.jpg

Then the clutch spring and washer

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild023.jpg

Wind in the cones on the drive side next. Get the cone fully wound in then undo it half a turn.
Do the other side next

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild024.jpg

On the drive side slip on the lock washer, adjust the cone to suit

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild025.jpg

Next fit the spacers and lock nuts

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild026.jpg

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild027.jpg

Note the way the different size spacers fit (Grifters only)

You're pretty much there now

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild028.jpg

Spoke protector and associated components

Fit the dust cover

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild032.jpg

Spoke protector

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild033.jpg

Thicker Spacer

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild034.jpg

Sprocket

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild035.jpg

Thin spacer

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild036.jpg

Spring clip

http://i17.photobucket.com/albums/b58/pcritcher/sturmey%20rebuild/sturmeyrebuild037.jpg

Job done!

Hi,

Sorry it's not a grifter but I've just bought a 1977 mk2 Chopper to go with my grifter, can anyone tell me what is required at the end of the spindle for the gears to work is it just the nut that the chain goes through? There seems to be something in the spindle whic I first though was the threaded part of the chain that had snapped inside, but it turns freely but wont screw out?

http://i231.photobucket.com/albums/ee204/mysteryspots/15062009083.jpg

Cheers,

Chris.

Yeah it's out, I managed to get it out with a thin screw driver. I'm just waiting on the toggle chain nut to arrive now so then I can set the gears. Then Bobs thi uncle!

Cheers.
