Its a bit tricky to describe how it goes together in writing!
Where in the country are ya? Maybe someone is local and could pop round and help you.
I've sent you a pm regarding this

Sorry I'm a bit late for you leen899, but I had a spare hour this evening (when my planned repair hit big trouble), so I took a few photos of my gear-shifter... hopefully it'll still be useful for someone...
(unless you have a jar full of ball-bearings, you might want to do the procedure over a shoe-box lid or something similar!).

A. Detaching & Disassembling

1. The gear shifter mounted on the handlebars:

2. Loosen the two screws and slide the whole mechanism off the handlebar:
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0177b.jpg

3. Completely remove the screws and pull the two halves of the outer shell apart (watch out – the internal spring may send things flying!):
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0178b.jpg

4. The components (listed clockwise from bottom-left):
- rear half of the outer shell
- cable
- grip
- spring and ball-bearing
- front half of the outer shell
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0179b.jpg

B. Assembling & Attaching

5. Insert the head of the cable into the space behind the red gear, and secure it by passing the cable through the slot (towards the yellow gear):
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0180b.jpg

6. Pull the rear half of the shell onto the cable (you can leave this step until later if you like):
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0181b.jpg

7. Take the split end of the spring and pass it over the cable:
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0182b.jpg

8. Place the spring in position so that the indicator space is over the red gear. The nearest square hole in the spring should be over the hole where the ball-bearing goes; insert the ball-bearing in it's hole:
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0183b.jpg

9. Take the front half of the outer shell and, making sure you have it the correct way round, push it onto the spring with the gear indicator in the desired position:

10. Bring the two halves of the outer shell together and attach them with the two screws. (Leave the screws a couple of turns loose for the next step):
http://i566.photobucket.com/albums/ss103/grif80/PICT0177b.jpg

11. Slide the mechanism back onto the handlebar and tighten the screws to secure it in place.

Top picture, great info      You can also slide the window up or down on the shifter thats shows the little red, yellow and blue colours for the gear change.
