Here's a little HOW TO explaining how to remove the rear spocket and spoke protector from the rear hub for cleaning or maintainence.

It's not a difficult job by any means and once the Springclip is removed the components simply slide off the Hub.
With regards to the springclip, and as described in the text, once you have unclipped the edge of the spring from the groove DO get hold of it with a pair of pliers!........It is a spring afterall and it WILL ping away from you if you havent got a decent grip on it!!!
It might pay you to clean the assembly as much as you can before removal, then give it a "good coat of looking at" before you actually start just to familiarise yourself.

OK, here we go!

*TIP - If the edge of the spring is not located in one of the 3 cut-outs on the hub simply push it round with the screwdriver

No it's not the same one...........the shiny one is off my "Prizzie" that i sorted at the weekend. This is off a pair that I'll be shortly putting up for sale so they're getting a clean-up also!. I'm hoping though to polish those scratches out, I've done it lots of times on alloy levers, it just depends on how deep they are!!
I'll let you know how I get on

Thanks for the info TL............I guess I could try polishing "into" the scratch, obviously it wont remove it completely though it may go someway to diguising it at least!

I'll let you know how it goes mate

Thanks again Luke

Here ya go!..............looks better methinks!

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p105/senseisue/GRIFTER/MKII018.jpg

.....and for comparison

http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p105/senseisue/GRIFTER/Project6.jpg

.......and the secret is........WIRE WOOL!!!

I started off with wet'n'dry paper but as Luke so rightly pointed out the alloy is too thin and you quickly begin to rub it away! Because the paper is a flat surface as is the spoke protector you tend to polish "over" the scratch. The wire wool,  in contrast, follows the contours of the scratch meaning that you can "smooth it out"
So starting with Coarse wool I polished "into" the scratch, then at a 45 degree angle to it, then at every other angle until it was gone (hope this is making sense!).
The subsequent grades just polish out the scratches left from the previous one until finally I used an 800 grade paper and finished off with a hand polish with AUTOSOL.

Worked a treat
