Just to add to the confusion, the images below are of a super mx tyre that was fitted to some US raleigh bikes around the time of the mk1 Grifter. publicity shots of the MK1 grifter that were used on the handlebar ticket show that pre production Grifters also had super mx tyres.

The modern repros like the ones on ebay have a similar tread patten to the mx rather than the original supergrip.

They were also a period replacement for the supergrip as I bought one to replace the worn rear on my Grifter many years ago.

the supergrips on ebay were listed by myself and they are genuine raleigh supergrips and should not be mistaken as "fakes"
cheers

Grifter Ste

Sorry I hope I didn't confuse the matter of them being genuine.

I was just trying to add a bit of info on them.

Hi Jaydog.  You mentioned earlier in this post that you have an exploded view / parts list for the grifter and that you'd look to see if you could get it posted. Just seeing if youve had any luck in doing so??

Hi Shorty

Thats a very nice looking SE, it looks in fantastic condition.

Your images confirm that It dates from May 1979. I'm sure the Grifter Guru would be interested in this as he was reserching the production start date of SE's.

It's another interesting twist In the Grifter history and comes at the same time as it has come to light that some mk2's came with mk1 seats.[/quote]

Thats is a SERIOUSLY early "SE".

For the benefit of Jaydog, in reference to the silver Grifter, the annotation "SE" began from the fact that it was virtually the same colour scheme as the MK2 "CHOPPER SE". It therefore became known as the SE for that reason especially by those who knew of the chopper se.

As to the silver grifter, its got a bit cloudy whether the silver grifter is actually a MK1 or MK2 now, especially with some having MK1 rear mudguards ! and now the may 79 date ?? It is beginning to sound like the bridging model between the MK1 and MK2 Grifter and would indeed make it "something special" if it was.

FAO SHORTY:

could i possibly use the image of your frame number please ?? (i can edit out the digits after the first three.
