G'day,

I have just thought I'd try to restore my old Grifter Mk II to it's former glory. When cleaning the bike I have noticed the toggle chain that connects to the gear wire missing. I was wondering if this part can be replace or is a whole new gear mechanism needed.

Any help would be much appreciated.

Thommo

P.S.
I'm living in Melbourne Australia and I don't know of any Grifter spare part places over here.

yeah i think so. every seems to be in working order apart from the gears. i might need some new tyres though as the originals are a cracking a little. any comments on what i could do would be greatly appreciated as this is the first bike i've ever kept for this long and still wanted to ride.

If its good then keep it original mate. If the tyres still hold air and ride ok then good as most of us are riding with cracked tyres as the original supergrips are silly money and the replacements just dont look the same (i wish they had kept to the same design) im sure they could remake the original supergrip tyre there would be lots of buyers!

Make a list of parts you need and put it in the wanted section.

not that i know of, but then again i havdn't seen the bike for about ten years, so anything could have happened to it. thanks mike, much appreciated.
so to get the gears working again i would need a new gear toggle and new gear cable?
also, is that white plastic cap necessary for the gears to work?

you dont need the white cap to make the gears work but its best to have it to protect the gearchain and gunk getting into the inner workings of the hub (it also looks good!)    Yes like mike says it looks like the end is missing which the chain screws into so you are going to need a new gear cable.

as an alternative to fitting a whole new gear chain, if you can get hold of one of these type of "barrels" you can attach it to the existing gear cable

(sorry the pictures a bit blurry!)

thanks for that Gil. That seems to be the part i'm missing, as i've only got the screw that attached the gear cable. i have found a toggle chain cable adjuster on ebay along with the clear protector cap.

I think that type of gear system is ok for a custom but not if your keeping the bike original. (again only my opinion) and i am the daddy!!!        sorry im in a silly moon this morning it must be all this lovley september sunshine

think the "adjustable barrell" was fitted to the later grifters eg some of the supers and xl, i remember my boyhood xl had the same system - makes it a little easier to get the gears working too

hope you get your gears sorted thommo, it all adds to the grifting expereince - blue for the uphills, yellow for cruising and red for speed  smile/hapface01.gif
