Everyone talks about getting their bikes powdercoated but what are the chances of a normal spray can staying on your bike?

With good prep and quality spray it will stay on a bike, but powdercoating is superior.

personally i use cans as nice and cheap (especially from Wilkinsons!) not sure about good spray although i would imagine car sprays would be OK.

I get the paint off with nitromors/scraper/wire brush/plenty of swearing etc and then wash down frame.  stick a coat of primer on and this should highlight any defects quite well - rub down, wash and then respray.  once done then stick coats of paint and clears over the top.  basically the longer you take the better it will look (i'm lazy but mine still look OK - i aim for the general look rather than show standard).

i'm sure some of the others can probably give you a better idea though..

The only thing the British take seriousely is sport....

I bought all of the stuff you advised me to get and i stripped the frame in no time, but a lot of elbow grease. Nitromors is truely great stuff. Cheers again.

make sure you rinse it well to get rid of the nitromors.

Cheers for that. Had to wash it off of my skin when splashes hit me as well. It made me realise that this was some heavy stuff.

I bought a Strika off of EBay recently. Was in a bit of a bad way(it did state)most parts are ok though, tyres have perished but they'll do for mo. I thought about putting it back to former glory then realised it was again Prizmatic stickers! so i've decided on a custom stylee. I've bought a can of Rover British racing green and now just need to apply primer and then spray. Think i'll design some decals for it.

Ok, the bikes as good as finished.Tis looking good(well i think so) I'll put pics on this site as soon as. Yet another question. I've put the spray on the bike but want to put laquer of some sort over the top of it to add extra strength. Anyone know if this will work?

Dont be afraid of it. It was my first attempt. And when i did mess up i messed up bad. I thought the paint was dry(it was looking great) so i turned it over to see the bottom of the bike, when i turned it back i realised that i'd pushed the paint across the top bar, it looked a mess, so i waited till the next day and then rubbed it down with a very light sandpaper, and then sprayed it again and it was back to looking great again. I did end up buying more spray than i thought i'd need though.

I put clear coat over the wheels i painted to make them last a bit longer. I'd recommend sticking some over it.
