Hey i'm new to the forum and thought id tell you the story of what i believe is my Mk2 Grifter.

10 years ago as an eight year old boy i was wondering around a local carboot sale with five pounds in pocket money. Then amongst all the rubbish and tat i found what i thought was the coolest bike ever, it had a handle grip gear change and a speedo! WOW! i thought, the seller wanted a fiver for it and before id even sat on, or had a test ride my pocket money was gone and i was the proud owner of a Grifter. My mum saw what i bought and explained she wanted one as a child then i realised i had something a bit special.

When i first rode it on the street all my mates envied my bike and they paid me 50p to have a ride around on the estate, it was far from perfect, the saddle was ripped, the transfers were torn up, the seat reflector was missing and it was covered in rust spots but i didn't care. It was in constant use up until 2005 when i moved on from bikes and started to grow up a bit.

Three weeks ago i found the Grifter again in the shed and felt a certain guilt that id left it for so long, it deserved better so after a bit of research (and finding this forum  ;)) i decided it needed some TLC and a fresh look for the 21st century. its currently been stripped down and im hoping that you guys can give me some tips as to how to take some bits off because all i've done so far is swear and hurt myself

In bits! smile/eek.gif no going back now

welcome to the forum mate. I like your story and it will have a happy ending with our help

It looks like you have wacked the cotterpin with no luck so like 99% of them there stuck in!!

Soak it in wd40 and leave for a couple of days to soak in then have another go. Check out the tech section for pictures.

What other help do you need mate?

try a bit of metal plate over the thread end and then a good whack,
if that does not get it out, drill time, start of small drill bit size and work your way up,

wait until you get try and take the handlebars out to regrease the head and fork bearings  ;) then the cotter pins wont seem so hard

The grifter magic still works on the youth of today...... Nice... a great story, so glad your sorting your bike out, will be nice to see this bike back to its former glory! hope you decide to re spray her in original silver with matching decals? your choice, but i think it would look well smart!! that sanyo speedo is identical to the one i used to have on my original silver mk2 it runs along the tyre wall via a little plastic wheel and cable drive..... good luck with whatever you decide to do with the bike, it will look like this when complete......

A strange tip that Bomberman and myself were shown and does work as i then tried myself. Don't be afraid to bang the cotterpin from the end that hasnt got the screw on it, then the other side, but remember the screw end is gonna bend easily. Basically it just moves that thing back and forwards.
