Came across this the other day. Its a Raleigh MTB of some descrïption and was origianlly Dark Red. Its larger BMX style bottom bracket and SR headset got me thinking...

Maybe i can build a replica of a Burner only in adult size that i can actually use without looking like i have stolen it from a child! So thats what i decided to do.

First i had a dig around in the Garage and found some Burner parts and a set of Wildcat forks with the longer steerer tube. I then stripped the frame of the MTB parts and binned them. I had a trial fit...

Once i was happy with that i removed the rear brake cable brace and caliper mounts. I converted a set of spare alex 26" wheels i had to single speed and trial fitted that with a BMX brake.

I was pleased to find it aligned! I finshed off removing all the lugs and had a think how to make the Forks longer? I cut the Wildcat Forks and inserted a sleve tube (a seat tube from a Kids BMX) I then got a spare set of Vektar forks and cut of the length i needed. I sloted them over the sleeve and popped in a self tapper to hold them together enough for me try them in.

They fit and looked rather tasty! I fitted some oldskool amberwalls and took a pic before taking the forks out to get welded and the frame shot blasted. This is as far as i have got...

I've fitted mini burner bars to try to prevent the bike from being too 'sit up and beg'. I've seen a few Bomber style bikes with smaller BMX style bars fitted and they looked ok. I'll see what it looks like when i paint it. Thinking of doing it like a Black/Red Mk2.

Might of been one of these? a raleigh mustang. I had the black and white one with the horses fading on the crossbar..... wish i had never sold that one.....it was a nice bike and very rare now.

Its def not a Mustang. The Black/White one was the Mk1 and was the only one released with a SR stem. The later models got a standard Sakae before they changed the colour scheme to Pink/White/Purple (AKA Mk2) After that only the colour was changed to make the model pictured above.
I know this as i had both Mk1 and Mk2 Mustangs and my mate bought the model pictured above a year or so later.

I've started collecting the early Raleigh MTBs and have managed to find a Maverick, Lizard and Maraurder. I'll post some pics up if i get chance to dig them out. I upgraded the Maverick with a period 100GS groupset and half decent alloy rims with Farmer John Tyres. I use it now and then to go to work on. It rides really nice and its oldskool yellow and white paint certainly makes people look!
