a few weeks ago i bought a raleigh rebel bmx , its the same as a burner but not as popular .

Since i got it home i have removed the wheels , oiled the bearings , oiled the pedals , wheels , headset and i have also oiled the chain .
A chain which was seized solid , the wheels and pedals were likewise , the tyres were cut off of the rims as they were far to far gone to be of any use as the bike had laid out in all weathers for about 15 years .

I have ordered some nice comp 3,s in blue for her and have stripped the brake cables and calipers off of her for cleaning and reuse , the handlebars have been changed to xl bars which are the same size , these will be adorned with blue mushroom grips that i have bought  .

Today the sr stem was cleaned and checked to be found a ok so on thursday the work will commence as we are supposed to have a nice day and she should be approaching a rideable state

Cool

I think I had a Rebel

Maybe be better fitting a new chain.  I clean old chains.  But its probably easier getting a new one.  Ive got a angle grinder with a cup wire brush.  Gets the corrosion of the out side, then I dip them in oil.  Then leave them at an angle to drip out the excess oil.  But the corrosion will be in the chain.  Even working the links back and forth with a thin screwdriver and a pair of pliers.

Oh new chains are about £5

Now the fight back begins , a new chain has been bought from tesco at a cost of £3.29 so that will be added at some stage , she has two new comp 3 tyres , in blue with gum walls , i have just uncerimoniuosly removed the 3 speed grip from her xl handlebars , so toady she will be given a really good wash with hot water and a proper bike wash brush , then she will be t cut to finish the job and then the new bits will go on starting with the blue mushroom grips and front wheel with new tyre .

As i may have said , i have a budget of £50 to get this bike done (not including cost of bike ) so below s a break down of costs so far :

TYRES £16.00 POSTED

GRIPS £4.99

INERTUBES £4.99

So we are still very much on target to be within the budget so cant be bad

Today the mushroom grips went onto the t cut handlebars , which in turn went back onto the t cut and polished  sr stem , the black comp 3 was removed and a NOS comp 3 was applied to a  shiney front wheel rim  which attached to a set of t cut and polished forks .

Then the bike was bought indoors from the cold nights .

The rear forks were t cut , there are still small rust cuts in the paint work but these are deep cuts and apart from being dabbed with paint are going to stay as part of the bike .

I am going to give her a new set of raleigh rain checks when i re apply the cleaned blue calipers , its getting there slow but sure

The brake levers were ordered today , i was going to go with the blue levers but in the end and with the budget in mind i opted for  silver alluminium ones , they should go well with the blue grips as well as the blue brake cables  smile/hapface01.gif

the brake levers have been added but the whole thing has stalled as i have been to busy saving grifters but hopefully in the next few days it will be back on again , and i will build it all back up so at least its not half a bike sat in the garden resting on my workmate looking all forlorn

The wheels in the picture are supposed to be chrome but are in fact covered in a really thick rust and corrosion has begun to set in .
These have been extensivley wire brushed to remove the worst of the rust and they have come up a lot nicer , yes they are still bad but she is a survivor and it all adds to the character of her but they are 100% better than they were .
The seat post is seized solid in the frame but it will come round to my way of thinking sooner or later lol

She is coming indoors in a minute to have her new back tyre fitted , as well as a new innertube and to have the rear wheel re fitted and the chain re oiled .

One step foward , one step back , the new wheel is all rockin and ready to go and then aaargghh , one of the wheel nuts is the wrong thread pattern and is stuck fast on the spindle , so after much huffing and puffing , and a variety of tools it was removed , she is now almost complete in her rebuild , the wheels are back on albeit with one rear wheel nut .
Next will be the blue calipers going back on and her blue cables being added and you just never know she may almost be ridden today for the first time in possibly 10 years , HERES HOPING !!!

Big up to my local Raleigh dealer
SYLVESTER BROS
who were most helpful in my search of a 10m wheel nut , they sent the young lad out back and told him not to come back until he had the right nut , which he did , i then had a chat with the guy who has got a super burner for sale , we had a chat about that and then i left a happy man .
The seat post is still stuck fast but i can live with that for the time being i have put another one on top of it and then put the saddle atop of that  :/
