Em's XL is now in pieces ready for paint.
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/halfpint_fighter/picture00072.jpg?t=1177441538

It started off like this
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/halfpint_fighter/100_1845.jpg?t=1177441814

The plan is to paint it baby blue. Not sure what colour the handle bars and mudguards will be yet.
We got some NOS blue handgrips and gear cable.
Going to get sparkle outer brake cable covers from choptastic.

Neither of us have ever restored a bike before but we decided to jump in at the deep end and go for it!
In fact apart from a little help Emma is doing the work herself. There was a complaint when she burnt herself with paint stripper!

Good on you two, I remember seeing this on Ebay before you got it.

It's not only great to see another Griff come back to life but especially as it was treated to a paint job by a one eyed penguin  with a gammy leg

Not sure about Brooklands, saw the thread but have family stuff happening that weekend. Also not sure that the XL will be done by then, none of this 48hr resto craziness!

Yes that is a 1972 Danbury camper. Just finished re-fitting the engine after a cyliner head cracked, at least with good compression the effect of the twin DRLA's should be felt.

It was an interesting paint job! I don't feel bad about changing it from original as it was missing parts and the paint was screwed up. Bizarrely it was on Ebay yet was 2 miles from our home!

Em has been pretty busy. The frame was primered yesterday afternoon.
Today the top coat was done
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/halfpint_fighter/picture00075.jpg?t=1177780080

Just need to let that dry, then wet sand with 1200, add kustom stickers and then a few coats of lacquer.

Still have wheels and bits to attack with metal polish!

I am loving that colour as well what other bits are you having on it, just an idea but with that colour and the white guards etc me thinks some chrome and a set of white walls would look sweet

Ello.

I would love some white walls, you've completely picked-up on the look I'm going for. They would really compliment it. White walls are my fav on vws too for uber retro-ness.

I've got lil ole 8 ball valve caps and a bike horn waiting to go on, the horn is new stock of the first one I ever had. It's blue with a big white bulb and you squish it to make it go 'hee-haaw!' Takes me back to my my childhood \m/

The sparkle brake cables have arrived and Em has added lot's of stickers before we lacquer it.

There are some small runs and some of the stickers didn't like the curves of the mudguards but hey ho it will still look better than before and it is how Em wants it to look.

So we left the frame to harden for a week and this afternoon it went from this
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/halfpint_fighter/picture00076.jpg?t=1178996387

to this (whitewalls propped up for effect)
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/halfpint_fighter/picture00077.jpg?t=1178996448

Tyres need fitting as does the crank and a new chain.
Then a little polish on the metal parts.

We'll have to check out when the various meets are and bring them both.
We also will take them to as many VW shows as we can. Went to Big Bang a couple of weeks ago and spotted at least 3 grifters being ridden around.

The front guard has Courtney Love and the heart from the band 'Hole'

The rear guard has a sacred heart and a mambo pin up girl
http://i7.photobucket.com/albums/y252/halfpint_fighter/100_2197.jpg?t=1179064696
